Authors,
Bridget Mary Meehan, D. Min. and Regina Madonna Oliver, D. Min. provide
away for parents and teachers of religious education to introduce children,
through story and guided prayer, to the realization that God is an intimate
and warmly loving author and sustainer of their very life and being.
Each lesson is geared to show the child that God's love is 'Motherlike',
sustaining and nurturing, as much as it is 'Fatherfike', supporting
and maintaining. But to suggest that God is 'parent-like' is to connote
that this is 'parent-likeness' at its highest level of perfection.
An
introduction provides this background, explaining that God-images--metaphors
about God--while helpful, may at times limit our understanding, since
the reality of God is always infinitely more than any verbal image can
convey!
During
each guided reflection the child is invited to sit, imaginatively, on
Mother God's lap, and listen to a story "from her wonderfid book, the
Bible." Each story begins with a scriptural quotation which suggests
a feminine quality in God's love, on which the story of the day builds.
Lesson
Plans or Procedures the presenter may follow in working with a child/children
are provided to help parents or teachers with the presentation process.
Three children's songs provide music for "settling into meditation,"
for summarizing the story-reflection and for celebrating God as maker
and birther of all creation.
The
authors have discovered through feedback from readers, that adults,
both women and men, have also experienced healing and enrichment through
these childlike meditations. As they . . stered to their children, they
encountered God's sustaining womb-love embracing them at the core of
their being. Adults are beginning to utilize the book for their own
spiritual growth.
